Reflect upon the work we have done this week with the Medicine Wheel, texts related to Residential Schools, Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.
Create a piece of writing (poem, journal entry, reflection, narrative, essay) that responds in a meaningful way to this work. You might summarize one of the texts and explain why it was powerful. You might explain Chanie's journey and death as explored in Secret Path.
The links we have used throughout the week are in the blog posts below.
Submit your work via Google Docs by sharing it with lestafford@educbe.ca.

Preparing for Orange Shirt Day
Take some time to explore the following interactive maps of Residential Schools.
http://projectofheart.ca/maps-visual-aids/
Residential schools impacted indigenous people across Canada. Although Phyllis was a student near Williams Lake BC, similar stories would have been experienced from coast to coast.
Consider what Phyllis shared about her experience when she arrived at her St. Joseph Indian Residential School.
Imagine other personal items that would have been lost as children like Phyllis arrived at these schools. Briefly respond by journalling about it. How were the medicine wheels of these children impacted by these losses?
Additional multimedia narratives to explore (either before or after your journal entry):

The Silk Road
Please use the following article to gain background knowledge of The Silk Road. Don't forget about the recording of the reading at the bottom of the page.
https://www.ducksters.com/history/china/silk_road.php
Based on what you read, gather images of the products collected along the Silk Road that would have been brought back to Eastern Europe and organize them in a list ranging from greatest to least value (use your own judgement and consider quantities!). You should work with a minimum of five products.
Use Britannica ImageQuest for your images.

Next, consider online shopping sites like Amazon. How is the revolution of online shopping similar to The Silk Road? Which one had more impact on society and its worldview? Complete the graphic organizer (paper version from Stafford or electronic version - download, fill it in and print it) to show your thinking.

Priscilla and the Wimps
This week, students are working to retell the story of Priscilla and the Wimps by designing their own original comic strips or "Dinner Table" scripts. Some time will be provided each day for them to do this with a walkabout showcase celebration on Thursday. Students may choose to adapt or change the setting, characters or conflict.

Why Do We Even Need to Know This?
The Black Death (or bulbonic plague) continues to make news headlines in 2019.
Select at least two of the articles from the following Newsela Text Set and create a PSA (Public Service Announcement) that persuades people to learn more about the Middle Ages and this disease that devastated Europe.
Your PSA may be a poster containing facts, a radio announcement script or a pamphlet.
You may use the chromebook as a resource for research beyond Newsela if helpful.

Reflection: Alvin Law Presentation
Here are some great questions to use when reflecting on Alvin Law's presentation. Use them with a teacher, family member, peer or friend. Mrs. Logan and I are available to talk about any or all if you wish.
What did you think about today’s presentation and Mr. Law?
What did you find interesting or amazing?
What was your biggest take away from today’s presentation?
Think about the challenges you face each day? Think about the challenges he faced each day and continues to face?
What can you do to over come these challenges and face the day or challenge in a more positive way?

Thursday update
We have spent some time this week exploring the Middle Ages and the Feudal System. Next, students are going to try narrative writing through the following task:
Middle Ages Writing Task
